Carat Weight
Diamonds are weighed by carat units. A carat is
0.2 grams, so a five carat diamond weighs one gram. The carat unit is
divided into 100 points, so that a half carat diamond is 50 points in
weight or 0.50 ct. and so on.
The weight of the diamond corresponds to a certain
size in diamonds, mostly referring to round brilliant diamonds, so that
a one carat diamond of a good cut should measure about 6.3-6.5 millimeters
in diameter and so on.
It is important to know that when asking for a certain
carat weight, you are buying a weight unit and not size, because what
determines the size ultimately is only the Cut, or proportions of a diamond.
A diamond cut too shallow will have a larger look. A diamond cut too deep
will have a smaller look, a smaller size. But both will weigh the same.
